Starting Your Crafting Journey: A Joyful Guide to Cardmaking & Scrapbooking

Thinking about diving into cardmaking, scrapbooking — or maybe even both? Whether you’re just starting out or returning to your creative passions, remember this: you don’t need to have everything figured out from the start. This is your personal creative space, meant to be fun and inspiring—not stressful or overwhelming.

Crafting is all about joy, self-expression, and connection—not perfection or pressure. So let’s take a deep breath, let go of the “doing it right” mindset, and explore a simple, mindful way to begin (or restart!) your creative journey.

Start with What You Already Have

If you’ve got CTMH supplies like ink pads, blocks, adhesives, or stamps — use them! There’s absolutely no need to toss what still works. Your current stash can blend beautifully with Stampin’ Up! products, and it’s a smart way to avoid buying duplicates.

Crafting can add up quickly, so starting with what you already own helps you spend wisely and see what truly adds value. Plus, mixing old and new is part of the magic — like pairing your favorite CTMH cardstock with a fresh Stampin’ Up! stamp set for a whole new look!

And if your ink pads are dry or your trimmer isn’t cutting clean, using what you have will help you spot what needs replacing — intentionally, not impulsively.

Let’s Build Your Stash Together — Step by Step

#1: Take Inventory Go through your supplies and sort them into:

  • Paper/Cardstock
  • Ink Pads & Colors
  • Adhesives
  • Stamp Sets (Sentiments vs. Images)
  • Tools (Trimmer, Blocks, Punches, Dies)
  • Embellishments & Extras

Make a note of what’s in good shape, what’s dried out, and what you rarely use.

# 2: Fill the Gaps First  Once you know what you’ve got, we can figure out what you actually need — starting with the essentials that’ll give you the most versatility.

# 3: Choose a Colour Family You Love  Pick a palette that makes you smile:

  • Brights (cheerful and bold)
  • Subtles (soft and calming)
  • Neutrals (go with everything)

Then slowly build with:

  • A pack of assorted cardstock
  • A few coordinating ink pads
  • Matching Designer Series Paper (DSP)

This way, everything works together beautifully.

Step 4: Add 1–2 Stamp Sets That Do It All

Look for sets that:

  • Work across occasions (thank you, birthday, hello)
  • Include both images and sentiments
  • Coordinate with punches or dies

Step 5: Add Tools When You’re Ready

No pressure to buy everything at once! Tools are long-term investments. When you’re ready, consider:

  • A label or tag punch (super versatile!)
  • Embossing folders for texture
  • A die-cutting machine (Mini or full-size)

Step 6: Try a Kit — They’re So Fun! tampin’ Up! kits are perfect for trying new things without a big commitment. They’re great for travel, gifts, or crafting with friends — and everything you need is included.

Step 7: Come Craft With Me!
